Obituary for Bruce Kenneth Makos

Bruce Kenneth Makos
On Monday, March 13, 2017, Bruce Kenneth Makos, age 57, passed away suddenly at his cottage home on Lake Catchacoma. Bruce was a well-known and much-loved chiropractor who sold his Richmond Hill based business in 2012 and retired. Since then, he has enjoyed spending time with his grandkids, relaxing at the cottage, and travelling the world with his best friend and life partner, Karen Bentham.

Bruce graduated from University of Toronto with an MSc in 1987 and from the Canadian Memorial Chiropractic College in 1991. He was an active member of his profession, serving on the Board of Directors of the Ontario Chiropractic Association from 1993 until 2001. In 1993 Bruce founded Richmond Hill Rehabilitation Centre, later named Makos Health Associates, where he provided rehabilitation services and served as an assessor and Clinical Coordinator of a Designated Assessment Centre and later an Independent Medical Evaluation Centre. He recently began working as a part-time adjudicator at the Safety, Licensing Appeals and Standards Tribunals Ontario.

Bruce loved his work and his colleagues, many of whom became his dear friends; however, his deepest love was for his family, including Karen, step-children Kelly and Alayne Mitchell, Patrick Garcia and Andrew Watts, and his cherished grandchildren, Claire and William Garcia, and Avery Watts, all of whom are devastated by his loss. Bruce was predeceased by his parents, his beloved grandmother, Genny, and his brother Brian.

Bruce was a gentle giant with a booming voice and larger than life presence. He was kind, generous, and quick with a smile. His loss leaves a gaping void in the fabric of his family, especially for Karen, who is lost without him. His extended family, including his father-in-law, Len Bentham, and Karen’s siblings also mourn the loss of an amazing man and good friend.

A celebration of Bruce's life will be held at The Lake House, 600 Liverpool Road, Pickering, on Sunday, April 9, at 2 pm.
