Obituary for Brian Hilton

HILTON, Herbert Brian, P.Eng. Retired Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd.

It is with profound sadness we announce the peaceful passing of Brian on November 16, 2014 at the age of 92 in his retirement residence in Whitby, Ontario. Born in 1922 in Prince George, British Columbia, he was the devoted husband of the late Sylvia Hilton and loving father of Jane of Whitby (Gord Fry), Jennifer of Deep River and the late Ian Hilton. He was the proud grandfather of Alexander (Alec) and was looking forward to attending his graduation in Water Resource Engineering at the University of Guelph in February.

Brian grew up in the interior of BC where he first became acquainted with the mining industry but it was his mother who introduced him to the piano and where he gained a lifelong love for music. In addition to playing the piano, the family fondly remembers his forays into musical productions, choral music, the trombone and even the bagpipes.

Through sheer determination Brian graduated from the University of British Columbia in Metallurgical Engineering in 1946. He worked briefly in Ontario before following a friend down to Brazil where he ran the assay laboratory for a mining company. Returning to Canada in 1950, Brian was employed in the Yukon before he joined the British Geological Society and ventured to Uganda, Africa. It was here that he met his future wife who he later married in Penicuik, Scotland.

The couple settled in Deep River, availing themselves of the many activities and where Brian enjoyed a successful career at the Chalk River Nuclear Labs. As an avid outdoors person, Brian became a member of the Ski Patrol, Yacht and Tennis Club and enjoyed swimming, sailing, water skiing and skating on the Ottawa River. His favourite story was how he came to purchase his beloved log cottage back in the 1960s where the family made many memories over the years. His canoe adventures are legendary in the aluminum canoe they dubbed the “submarine”. Brian was a 30-year survivor of cancer but didn’t let him slow him down in his outdoor pursuits. He cross-country skied and played tennis weekly until his knees forced him to surrender.

He will be well remembered as an incredibly gentle man with a quick smile, without cross word or criticism of anyone. Not even when his daughter was learning to drive and took a post too close leaving a red streak down the side of the green car did he become annoyed. Brian had an enthusiasm for living, an interest in people and often said he was blessed with a good life. No regrets.

By request there will be no visitation. A Celebratory Service will be conducted at a later date. In memoriam donations to the Charity of your choice would be gratefully appreciated. The Hilton Family would like to thank the people at Amica at Whitby for their assistance and friendship during the past three years.
Always remembered, forever loved.
