Joan Mary Teague

Passed away peacefully on Monday April 22, 2019 at the age of 81 years. Deeply beloved wife of Michael for 39 years. Daughter of the late John and Dorothy Venning of Blackstock, Ontario. Cherished sister-in-law to John and Kim Curtis of Winchester, England and loving Aunt to nephew Eddie.

Joan will be dearly missed by her many friends and family.

Joan was a graduate of the University of Toronto and an elementary school teacher for 36 years. The majority of her teaching career was spent with the Durham District Board of Education. Joan was a committed and dedicated teacher whose primary concern was the nurturing and well being of all of her students.

I first met Joan in the early 1970’s when she was a strong supporter of the amalgamation of the elementary teacher unions and the creation of the Durham Elementary Teachers’ Association. Our friendship continued for the next 45 years as teaching colleagues, March break trips together, get togethers with the Lord Durham Gang of 8, times at each other’s homes, her annual Christmas party and reunions in Goderich. Joan with her mischievous mind and happy disposition was always the life of the party. Joan was a superb teacher with a fabulous rapport with the students. She was a mentor and counsellor to many young teachers who went on to distinguished careers in education. Joan and Mike had an everlasting “Love Boat” romance and marriage. Our deepest condolences to Mike.

Joan was much more than a friend for thirty-five plus years. In teaching she was a mentor. In life, the voice of reason and, on a more personal level, one of the funniest and wisest people I have been lucky enough to encounter. She will remain in my heart.

Such a sad time and Mike you have my most heartfelt sympathies. I have lots of wonderful memories and one of those was all of our Venning Christmas’ in Blackstock. After our traditional dinner, Dorothy, John and Joan would come with there beautiful red apples and to see what all of us kids unwrapped from each other and then a fun night of cards! Loads of laughter and much patience as I always wanted to play, I would sit beside Joan as she always had some great stories from her years of teaching.
When I was in college Joan picked me up in Scarborough and took me to a couple of Leafs game as she had season tickets for years and they were awesome, it was awesome to go and was always her treat. Rangers we saw twice as I was a fan.
These are only some of the wonderful memories, I have many more!
Take care Mike, your in my thoughts. Penny Heard

I am so sorry to hear of Joan's passing. She was a wonderful woman and lived life to the fullest. I always enjoyed booking her trips because that meant we would have a good chat and visit....and always a laugh or two. I can only hope to live like Joan making the most of everything and enjoying it along the way. My thoughts are with you Mike at this difficult time. Memories are yours forever. Take care
