Elizabeth Anne Steeper

Elizabeth grew up in Ottawa with her brother and 3 sisters, daughter of Frances and Col. A.F. Duguid. She came to know the Lord Jesus through her sister Margaret, who also led her to meet the young, handsome pastor, Bill Steeper. Bill and Libby were married in 1950, and over 58 years of marriage were blessed with 6 children and 19 grandchildren. After Bill passed away in 2008, Libby enjoyed the additional joy and privilege of being involved in the lives of 14 great grandchildren.

As a young married couple, Libby and Bill began their ministry with Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Canada. Soon after, they moved to Honolulu, followed by London, North Bay, Toronto and Markdale Ontario. They opened their home with gracious hospitality, sharing the love of Jesus with all who entered. Libby and Bill had a heart for pastors and their wives, university students, young couples and small group ministry.

Elizabeth was energetic, creative and fun. She loved to minister over the phone and was committed to praying for family and friends. Her ability to encourage and cheer others on in any small or large victory was one of her cherished gifts.

We celebrate as Elizabeth was promoted to Glory on Good Friday, April 19, one week before her 91st birthday. It was a privilege for all 6 of her children to be by her side, surrounding her with love in prayer, song and affection. Though her body was failing, God’s spirit rose up within her, pouring out words of blessing, encouragement and gratitude.

Praise God!

Steeper, Elizabeth Anne

Hi dear cousins. I have memories of you arriving in Ottawa in that blue station wagon with its Hawaiian licence plates, after your long drive from the west coast. The year Ruth was a baby you stayed a night or two with us before going up to Dra-Bu. And of course up there we all sat around in the tent playing cards when it rained, and otherwise the river drew us in... Aunt Libby was always encouraging and full of energy. Except when she was luxuriating in a massage by Karen... Fast forward to her years in Markdale after Bill died: I'd very occasionally come by on my way to or from Grey County, bringing fruit if I remembered, because fresh mango and other fruit was her great pleasure. She'd catch me up on news, and talk wisely and insightfully about things, children's hopes and possibilities mostly, and always in a positive constructive way, full of love. She was always welcoming and I never felt judged, just loved and accepted. What a gift she had for loving!

To Karen, Fran, Bill, David, Ruth and Jonathan and the entire Steeper family: I have fond memories of Libby from my earliest childhood days in London. Memories of visiting the log cabin in North Bay. And more recently memories of seeing her at my parents' 50th wedding anniversary, and subsequently chatting with her by phone. Libby had the most spectacular eyes. And when I was with her, the love in her heart beamed out through them, making me feel loved, and encompassed.

You have lost a wonderful mother and grandmother. A great warrior has gone home. My thoughts and prayers to you all.

Bill and Libby meant a great deal to us in our early ministry. May the family feel blessed because both Bill and Libby were willing to share their lives and faith with so many. God's love always shone through them to us and others. God's peace be yours at this time.

Thankful for opportunities to share Libby's life and faith recently and in years gone by when we attended Couples' Conferences through Men Alive. Living at Lynde Creek allowed us to offer her transport, and appreciate her wisdom and her family. No guilt in life, no fear in death! Jesus commands our destiny! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.
