Obituary for Joan Dimuantes

Joan Dimuantes
Joan Dimuantes, 1923 - 2017

Joan has been called home to God and it is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Mother, Nana and Great-nana at the age of 94. Devoted wife for 70 years to Peter who died in 2015, Joan’s deepest wish following his death was to continue to live in the house they shared. She passed away peacefully at home on Friday January 27th, 2017. The family wish to thank the CCAC Palliative Team and Amma for their help in making that possible.

Loving mother to Jane and her husband Barry Watts of Whitby, Ann Gotfryd of Toronto, Mark Dimuantes and his wife Rosemary of Toronto, Clair Dimuantes of Whitby and Adam Dimuantes of Whitby; Dearest Nana to Colin, Ian, Alison, Robyn , Susan, Aaron, Jonathan, Simon, Matthew, Gillian and Kathryn; Fondest Great-nana to Brittney, Emily, Chloe, Charlie, Hanna, Oliver Avery, Quinntin, Iris and Oliver Leo; Joan was born in Kent, England the only child of Frederick Arthur Clarke and Patricia Violet Copelin.

Joan’s father was a mechanical engineer and often travelled for work. So when her mother contracted polio and became bedridden Joan at the age of five was sent to boarding school. During the next 13 years St Ann’s Academy was home away from home. At school she rode horses and played field hockey. Known to never refuse a dare she told stories about getting into trouble for her “fits of giggles”.

In her senior year during a school trip to the south of France the Second World War broke out. Her father insisted that the nun’s try to get Joan back to England and she spoke of the adventure she had getting home. Her whole school was then evacuated north to a large country house. These early challenges shaped Joan’s practical, “let’s get this done” attitude. She never liked to make a “fuss” and didn’t believe in complaining.

Joan study drama and elocution at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England where she met the love of her life, Peter. They married in 1944. But the destruction and scarcity of the years after the war made life with a growing family very difficult. So In 1957, with four children, Joan and Peter immigrated to Toronto. In Scarborough Joan created a home with few resources and in 1961 gave birth to baby number five.

Joan understood the value of having experiences rather than acquiring possessions. Always practical she did not suffer fools easily. When her teaching degree was not recognized in Canada she did part-time private tutoring and speech therapy. She volunteered with the Brownies and became a Brown Owl. Once all her children were in school she learned to drive and worked for Carlton Cards. Joan later went back to education working for many years in the library at Cardinal Newman Catholic High School in Scarborough and after retirement at Neil McNeil.

Joan who was known to all as Mrs “D” was respected and valued as a co-worker for her intelligence, organizational skill and work ethic. She was appreciated as a friend who was quick to laugh and ready to banter. She was embraced as Nana and Great-nana as she shared the beach at the cottage, the bleachers at the hockey game and her love of books. And even though she didn’t like to cook there was a full roast dinner every Sunday for the family.

Joan will be long remembered for her trust in God and her devotion to Mary; for her quiet strength of character and willingness to stand up for “right”; for her quick wit and straight forward no-nonsense approach. But the most striking memory for anyone who met her will be that she made them a cup of tea…. A really good cup of tea!

Joan believed in the power of saying thank you and so in turn we say “Thank you” to her. She and her tea will be greatly missed.
