Obituary for Carol Wiggins
WIGGINS, Carol (nee Staples), R.N. 1926 – 2016
Dedicated mother, wife, grandmother, sister, nurse, friend, neighbour, community volunteer.
Carol is lovingly remembered by her children Greg (Kathryn), Linda (Steve), and Steven (Mylene), granddaughter Margaret, her sister Anna Strike, a host of nieces and nephews, and her many friends. Glenn, her husband for 64 years, and her brother Don both pre-deceased her in 2013.
Carol was born and raised on a farm near Orono, Ontario. She graduated as a Registered Nurse (RN) from the Toronto General Hospital (TGH) School of Nursing, class of Fall 1948, where she made life-long friends. “We were like sisters”, she would often say of her classmates.
Carol energetically engaged in an active, healthy, full life. She valued her sense of humour and her glass was metaphorically always at least half full.
In addition to being a wonderful mother, Carol was dedicated to her work as an R.N. She nursed for 42 years, part-time while raising her family and then working progressively more as children grew older.
She travelled widely with Glenn. Their many explorations were usually related to Glenn’s work as a zoologist, in early years camping with family in tow on field trips throughout Canada and the USA. In later years they travelled internationally.
Throughout her life, Carol loved to be outside. She sought opportunities to observe and understand the natural world, often while hiking or canoeing. She was a keen skater, skier and swimmer. She enjoyed music, dancing, and playing piano. She always grew a garden, producing abundant vegetables, fruit and flowers. She was an accomplished seamstress and knitter. She also managed to be an active community volunteer wherever she lived.
Carol was an enthusiastic photographer, especially of people. She delighted in making copies of her photographs to share with family and friends. One of her particularly cherished passions was staying in touch with the people she cared about, be it by phone, letter, and/or in-person.
Carol epitomized integrity, quiet capability, a strong work ethic, and compassion for others. She touched many, many people in positive ways. She greatly valued her family, immediate and extended, and her many friends. That devotion was reciprocated… she had a big fan club!
Carol died in peaceful dignity December 18, 2016, in Oshawa, Ontario, in her own bed in Thorntonview long-term care home where she resided for her last 2.5 years. Our family extends great appreciation to Thorntonview staff for their care for Carol. We are also profoundly grateful to Carol’s companion-caregivers Erin and Chantal for their exceptional care in Carol’s final years.
Carol requested cremation and no public memorial service. Private family remembrances will be conducted.
