Obituary for Kenneth McLeod McKenzie Irons

Irons, Kenneth McLeod McKenzie, born August 24, 1931 in Dundee, Scotland died at Ballycliffe Nursing Home, Ajax, Ontario on April 25, 2016 in his 84th year.

Formerly of St. Mary’s and Ottawa, he served in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders and the Grenadier Guards of the British Armed Forces and the Ceremonial Guard of the Canadian Armed Forces. His 34-year military career saw him serve in Palestine, Egypt, Hong Kong, Guyana, Berlin and at Buckingham Palace! Further extensive travels took him to Australia, Greece, Swaziland and Mexico. Following his military career, he spent a number of years working in media and community relations for each of Athletics Canada and the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the latter at their request from the day the hospital opened. He was predeceased by his loving wife Beverly Ann McDonald of Springfield, Massachussetts. (Their story was quite amazing given that they met in 1958, when he was on a tour of 56 cities in Canada and the U.S.A. with the Grenadier Guards. They made a heart-to-heart connection and knew that they were for each other immediately. They were not in contact for almost 30 years, however each heart always knew where the other heart was. Eventually, they re-established contact. They had their joyous wedding day, but life gave them hardly any time together at all before her death due to cancer.) Kenneth was also predeceased by his proud son Graham and his beautiful granddaughter, Lindsay Wilson. He is survived by his devoted daughter Alison Irons (Greg Watson) of Ajax; his precious grandchildren, Andrew Wilson (Joyce Lau) of Toronto and Kenneth and Jordana Irons of London; daughter-in-law Chimuka Irons (Andy Lozanski), as well as his loving family in Scotland and Ottawa.

In 2006, he was an innocent victim in a bad car crash and thereafter lived permanently in pain, first in a wheelchair, then bedridden. He was greatly indebted to the cherished friends and neighbours who helped with his care at home. The family would like to express its thanks and appreciation to former Mayor of St. Mary’s, Jamie Hahn; Mrs. Helen Robb; Ms Bethany Riddell, Ms Paula Grover; Ms Laura Pieroni and Ms Paula Wilcox. Kenneth always insisted that when the time came for this notice (which he wrote himself), mention should especially be made of the years of unconditional love he got from his sequential cats: Mitzi, Smudge, Chiquita, Lucretia, Tapatia and Soraya. Cremation has already taken place. In accordance with Kenneth’s wishes, no service was held. Online condolences are welcome at www.barnesmemorialfuneralhome.com/
